Battle Creek Girls' Chorus Names New Director

The Music Center of South Central Michigan has announced the appointment of a new music director of the Battle Creek Girls' Chorus.
Chosen through a national search, Lansing resident Meredith Bowen will begin her tenure with the professional-level touring choir in August.

Founded in 1987, the Battle Creek Girls' Chorus provides training and performance opportunities for girls eight to 18 years of age. With nearly 100 members representing 10 school districts currently enrolled, the chorus gives public and private concerts locally, and appears with the Battle Creek Symphony and other orchestras. Recent summer tours have included Toronto, Washington, D. C., and New York. Tours to England in
2001 and 2005 included participation in the Shrewsbury International Music Festival.

Ms. Bowen succeeds Brian C. Clissold, who is leaving to pursue a graduate degree in choral conducting after 11 years in the position.

Ms. Bowen currently teaches choir and History of World Music at Lansing Community College, directs the Lansing-based women's choir, Sistrum, and maintains a private voice studio in Lansing. She holds a master of music in choral conducting degree from Michigan State University, as well as a bachelor’s degree in music education from West Chester University in Pennsylvania. Ms. Bowen has taught music for four years in public schools and has held directing and singing positions in Lansing area churches.

Her enthusiasm for choral music and knack for creative programming is going to bring what is now a very strong choral program to the next level. I am confident our families and audiences will be inspired by her passion and talent."

Bowen said, "I am honored to be chosen as the next director of the Girls' Chorus. I'm impressed with the girls' musical aptitude, love of music, and energy. I'm looking forward to exploring exciting repertoire with these young musicians."
