Faculty FAQ's
•
What is the current rate of pay?
o $10 each for the 20-minute lessons, and $25/hr for all other lessons.
The IRS gets its cut, which benefits the faculty, as they do not
pay self-employment tax in this income. Pay is biweekly.
• Are there opportunities for students and faculty to
perform?
o Each CMS site offers monthly Spotlight Recitals as well as a Fall
Festival and a Share-A-Thon in the spring. Students are encouraged
to perform often to improve their skills. Faculty are expected to
perform to keep up their skills, though it need not be at the CMS.
CMS recitals are for CMS students and faculty only, unless the visiting
performer is an accompanist or part of an ensemble.
• Will I be evaluated?
o Teacher evaluations are done by the CMS Director within the first
year of employment and afterwards as needed. CMS families also evaluate
their teachers once a year. The Director is available by comment
card, email, and phone to discuss concerns about and with faculty.
• When can I start?
o It is sometimes hard to get started in your teaching studio if
you live out of town and have a high minimum number of students
you require to make the trip. Our business is a demand business,
and even names on a waitlist do not guarantee students.
• Can I teach at any CMS site?
o When hired for CMS, you are welcome to teach in any site without
another interview, if the need for your services arises.
• Are faculty paid for missed lessons?
o If a faculty misses a lesson, it must be made up. Faculty are
paid for the missed lesson when it is made up. If a student cancels,
the faculty is paid when the lesson was scheduled, and are expected
to make up one such student-canceled lesson per semester per student.
If a student simply does not show up, the faculty is paid and the
lesson is not made up. There are make up weeks at the end of Fall
and Winter semesters, and other times can be arranged as well.
