What is music first?
Develop
your child’s mind and spirit in this enjoyable and social
class of singing, chanting, moving, and playing of simple percussion
instruments. These classes will
give your child a jumpstart in their musical development, so music will come much more easily to them in the future, and
be an enjoyable part of their lives.
Fall
and Winter semesters: 12 weeks, plus an orientation session for parents explaining Gordon
Music Learning Theory and what parents can expect from the classes.
The last class includes an evaluation report of your child’s
musical development. A CD of class songs is provided.
Spring
and Summer semesters: 6 weeks, no orientation or evaluation.
Class
Levels:
Infant/Toddler (birth to 3 years) and Preschool (3-5 years) Children experience a wide variety
of tonalities and meter through movement, singing, and playing of simple
percussion instruments in a relaxed environment. Parents or other caregivers
are required to participate. Class size limit: 10
Transitional (ages 5-7, based on musical readiness)
Instructor recommendation is required. Focuses more on music theory
and correct responses. Parents or other caregivers not required to attend.

Music First is offered at the Battle Creek and Marshall Campuses, and new this
spring, in Albion at Kids 'n' Stuff Children's Museum (register
through Marshall)
Materials:
Battle Creek classes are taught by a certified Gordon Music
Learning Theory instructor, with no home materials needed.
Marshall/Albion classes are taught by a certified Musikgarten
instructor, who recommends purchase of optional home materials.
